There was a time, not so long ago, when every part of my day revolved around my children.
Meal times? Planned around them.
Playdates? Prioritised.
Even my own dinner? Usually their leftovers, standing at the kitchen bench.
I didn’t realise it then, but I had stopped really looking after myself.
As someone who tends to overthink and feel things deeply, I found myself completely consumed mentally, emotionally, physically by everything and everyone else. I couldn’t even find the brain space to ask myself what I needed, let alone give it.
What happened?
I lost myself.
I forgot who I was outside of being their mother. I stopped doing the things I loved. I didn’t prioritise my wellbeing. Not at home. Not in the gym. Not at work. I became the leftover -grabbing what was left at the end of the day, and even then, only if there was time.
And I just... accepted it.
That this was motherhood. That this was normal.
Until it wasn’t.
Until it stopped being sustainable.
I started to feel resentful. Of the routines. Of the people around me. Of the work I once cared so deeply about. I didn’t feel good but not in the “I need a nap” kind of way. I didn’t feel whole.
And here’s what I discovered:
Feeling good isn’t about getting a PT or going on a 3-week diet.
It’s about reconnecting with your body, your mind, your passions, your people, your self.
It’s about protecting your energy.
Making space for peace, even in busy days.
Sparking joy again.
Remembering the you behind the mother.
And I know now I wasn’t alone (even if I felt it):
62% of new mothers say they’ve lost part of their identity since becoming a mum (Psychology Today). That’s nearly two out of every three women who no longer recognise the person they were before motherhood. The passions, routines, confidence - blurred or buried under nappies, school lunches, and invisible labour.
79% feel guilty when they take time for themselves. As if tending to yourself is indulgent. As if your needs are somehow less valid now that you’re a mother. This kind of guilt keeps women stuck in survival mode.
